It’s been almost eighteen years since the league announced the arrival of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Bosh. And upon their arrival, they wore their draft day “best.” At best, all draft attendees wore oversized and ill-fitting suits that could clothe the entire United States in white, striped, and plain fabric. While many consider the 2003 NBA draft class to be the best in recent memory, they also consider their suits to be the worst. Let’s take a look at the best-worst looking suits from that legendary draft.
Honorable Mention: TJ Ford's Rookie Photoshoot
I mean. Come on. Fit game: too much cloth.
LeBron James
LeBron is my favorite player of all time, let me make that clear. But frankly, LeBron looks like a slim marshmallow. Everything is white- the jacket, the undershirt, the pants, and the tie. As will be the case with the rest of the draft day fits, everything is ill-fitted. The jacket shoulders are crazy wide and the sleeves are too long. The pants make LeBron’s leg look like tree trunks, and the bottoms drag along the heels of his shoes. The shoes, to me, are the only redeemable aspect. They look pretty fly. LeBron is top two, so all fashion sins are forgiven.
Carmelo Anthony
I don’t even know where to start with Melo. This fit is atrocious. Maybe it’s a product of the times but yeesh. Tapered pants refuse to look good on anyone, especially when the leg bottoms drag beneath the heel of your shoes. The jacket is the main thing throwing me for a loop. It looks like it belongs to a military leader. The lapels are non-existent and the length goes down mid-thigh. I don’t mean to roast. I just expect better out of Melo.
Chris Bosh
I’ve got nothing but respect for two-time NBA champion Chris Bosh. Honestly, I respect most of the things going for the fit. The upper half isn’t too shabby. I like the tan suit, white shirt, and gold tie selection. The jacket is long but I’ll let it slide. What I won’t let slide is the bottom half. Again, we’ve got tapered pants that’re way too wide. I think what really seals the deal for me is the loafers. Loafers have run their course in fashion and should just cease from the global consciousness. Never wear loafers, especially when you’re about to get paid millions of dollars
Jarvis Hayes
Being the tenth pick in the draft, Jarvis Hayes had a tough NBA career. But what isn’t tough is the draft day suit. I will give him props for being different in his style, but it just does not work. He looks like he either owns a casino or is the head of a New Jersey mob. The suit is not very form fitting, but it is not bad.
Luckily, for the fans and players, NBA fashion has much improved. Still, I believe it is important to look towards our past so we do not repeat the same draft day fashion sins in the future.
