The New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies competed in a matchup on a snowy Tuesday night in Memphis, Tennessee. For the first two quarters it was a close contest, but in the second half it was all Zion and the Pelicans as New Orleans won 144-113.
The leading scorer for the Pels was Zion Williamson, who picked up 31 points off seven rebounds and six assists. He was a menace in the paint, completing a few and-one opportunities. Major contributions also came from Josh Hart, who had 27 points and nine rebounds, and Brandon Ingram who had 22 points and seven assists.
The secret to the Pelicans scoring success was all about transition offense. They were able to score more buckets by pushing the ball down court quickly, either attacking the rim with players like Zion or Adams, or dishing to a shooter like Brandon Ingram, JJ Redick, or Josh Hart outside the arc.
In general, their offense was efficient, shooting over 60% from the field and 50% from three-point range. In the second half, the Pelicans kept knocking down three pointers, which were crucial in maintaining a huge lead and keeping it until the final buzzer.
Ja Morant was a huge spark to the Grizzlies offense. It seemed as if every time he crashed the paint, he was able to score himself or dump it off to a teammate like Anderson or Valanciunas for an easy bucket. Regardless of the result, Morant still had a great game- 28 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.
The Grizzlies have lost every game in which they have given up at least 115 points this season. The same narrative remained true from the FedEx Center on Tuesday night.
The Pelicans look to build off this great offensive performance tomorrow against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Grizzlies will look to leave this game in the rear-view mirror and rebound against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
